Opening sequence - concept storyboards 001

I came up with a very quick concept of what might pass for an opening sequence to the single player aspect of the game, it would require extra modeling and such but cant expect such a thing to NOT require some extra work. Only problems I can think of so far are: the hologram projectors wont be in the same place each ship, so programming will be required by you guys, should be as simple as "move origin to here" I'm guessing?
The other problem... Fire, realistic or semi-realistic, how could we achieve this to act in the way I've drawn it out?

I think I managed to get in the majority of the story ideas we came up with today (as well as the old Supernova name idea).

Anyway, cockpit, this would obviously need to change depending on the players ship selection, assuming we get that far, I mean, I suppose a fairly good 2d image would even pass as a cockpit.

That is all I can think of that may or may not be a challenge to the team.

Anyway, comment with your thoughts.

  1. Cool :)
There is a way to have a texture as a video, though im not promising anything. You could theoretically just record something (to save loading) and put it onto the hud; though you could go further with it that would be the basic thing.

This kind of introduction requires minimal materials.

  2. As far as the simplicity of moving hologram projectors (assuming we even know what these will be and how they will function); I don't... know.

Cockpits for ships can be built with some standard form; it would be neat to have a 3d cockpit; most games go for that kind of 'feel' currently.

If it were 3d, there are ways of getting video playing on that as well. :)

We can just discuss this more, but as a basis I like what you've got.

  3. The fire might be difficult to create realistically, infact that kind of act would be altogether.

You could use particles (but... we all know what particles do); you could do it all in max using the same things from the game. This would allow you to render something you simply couldnt do real time; then play it as video later...

  4. Yeh the plan was to pre-render the whole history of the war 'movie' I figured the fire would be hard to do, though one idea would be to use a "company of heroes" approach where they used still 2d images which they moved in 3d space.

The projectors in my mind would be a simple 2d loop of light flickering.

So yeh, basically the way I've planned it out is so that the need for extra modelling etc is minimal, don’t want to go wasting hours of time modelling things for a 2 second shot. ;)

  5. :D yeah; as for that area wit hthe fire, not hard to make really.. all that stuff can be done with modifiers in max; the skybox, well just need one side of it as the background.. got plenty of those - though you'd want one that made the sky look as if war was going on etc.

The cockpit wouldn't be hard at all; of course this would depend on the ship your player is in; we can always have players starting in the same type of ship? some kinda scrappy ship...

Max has decent particle generators; just need an okay fire particle and the right numbers. o.o
